Group A is the opening group of the Football World Cup 2026, running from to . Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Czech Republic contest six matches across three matchdays, with the top two teams advancing to the round of 32. A strong third-place finish can also be enough to advance. Mexico host two of their three group-stage matches in front of their own supporters.
Group A brings together four teams from four different confederations. Mexico (CONCACAF) are the host nation and the group’s most recognisable name, playing their opener and final match on home soil. South Africa (CAF) make their return to the World Cup stage, having famously hosted in 2010. South Korea (AFC) are experienced World Cup campaigners, reaching the semi-finals in 2002. Czech Republic (UEFA) are the European representatives, bringing technical depth and recent continental qualification form.
The top two teams in Group A after all six matches are played advance directly to the round of 32. Teams are ranked by points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), then goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head record if still level. Crucially, a third-place finish in Group A is not necessarily the end: the best eight third-placed teams from across all 12 groups also progress. That means a team that finishes third can still reach the round of 32 if their points and goal difference compare favourably against third-placed teams in other groups.
All Group A matches are broadcast in the US by FOX Sports (English) and Telemundo (Spanish). The opener, Mexico vs South Africa on , airs free over the air on the FOX broadcast network and also streams free on Tubi — no subscription required. Later Group A matches move to FS1, which requires a cable or live-TV package. In Spanish, Telemundo carries all Group A matches free over the air, with streaming via Peacock for those who prefer to watch online. The broadcaster cards below show the full free-first breakdown.
